30 Day VGC: Day 6 - What is a Game you Thought You Wouldn’t Like, but Ended up Enjoying?

Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty. This was coming at a time where everyone was comparing Metal Gear Solid to Splinter Cell. And I believe that Splinter Cell pulls off stealth best between the two, and going into it I thought Metal Gear Solid would’ve been a watered down version of stealth game play. I was initially unimpressed with the game, but what caught my attention ended up being the well thought out story. I’m a sucker for a very good plot, and if game play is less than stellar, I will stick around for the plot (.hack).

Metal Gear Solid was my first entry into the series, and I’ve gone on to play the others and have enjoyed them as well.

New Goal

I’ve decided that I was going to replay Persona 3: FES on hard mode. This is being done for a few reasons, 1. Seeing all this Persona 3 related content on my dash, 2. I can get college credit out of it, and 3. Why the hell not?!

I’ve already gotten about 30 minutes in, and I’ve noticed some pretty interesting things. Such as the remix of ‘Burn My Dread’ playing on Minato’s earphones during the first cutscene. Also, when you’re walking home with Junpei, Ms. Toriumi turns her head and states at you for quite sometime…. Lol. There some girls fawning over Akihiko as well, but he’s always been a lady’s man.

So here’s to good times ahead of me!

30 Day VGC: Day 5 - What is the Hardest Game You’ve Ever Played?

Oh man, this was a toughie (no pun intended). While video games have generally gotten easier over the years, there are a few that retain the difficulty that made reaching the end of a game feel like an accomplishment instead of an entitlement. I made a post earlier about the difficulty of games, and with that focusing on newer games, I decided to take a look back at the NES era.

While it’s true that I could put 90% of the NES games I grew up with in this post, I’ve decided that Double Dragon III: The Sacred Stones is one of the hardest games I’ve ever played. Now, this game is incredibly fun, and with up to 4 playable characters there’s a bit of versatility considering it’s an NES game.

Now there are a few things that make this game hard, first off is the smart A.I. I remember that at a young age, getting to the final part of the first level felt like such an accomplishment. And even at the age of 20, it’s still a huge challenge. However, it does help that the game offers some weapons for you, first being what you can pick up from other enemies, some being projectiles. You also start each level out with an extremely strong weapon, but these are limited in uses and a best saved for the bosses (who will still be difficult). Another portion of the difficulty comes from that the game offers one life per character, and you only get continues on the two stages.

The hardest part of this game come with the controls. The strongest move in the game, the “Hurricane Kick.” The timing of this move is so precise, I doubt there’s anyone who can consistently pull it off 10 times in a row.

As I said before, this game is still incredibly fun, and if you’re up for an extreme challenge, you should check it out!

30 Day VGC: Day 5 - Who is your favorite video game developer?

Thinking back on it, I don’t really know why I thought of putting this question on the list, it just seems so random. Anyway on with the post!

So what went into my decision for this was a consideration of quality vs quantity (with quality getting preference). And based on the consistency of releasing good games, my favorite game developer is none other than Team Ninja!

You can tell that Team Ninja put a substantial amount of consideration into the quality of their product; with it’s popular Dead or Alive series saving Tecmo from bankruptcy, and Ninja Gaiden soon seeing the release of its third installment. You can also say that the workers at Team Ninja are perverts, since they seem to focus on the quality of their female ‘assets.’

Regardless, Team Ninja products continue to fill my gaming collection and I continue to enjoy them.

I sometimes wonder if I am in the minority for actually liking Fuuka Yamagishi in Persona 3.

I actually like Fuuka, lol. But unfortunately I feel like her presence would probably have been served just as well by a satellite if electronics had worked under the Dark Hour. also it’s not just her resolution I’ll be making fun of.

I never disliked Fuuka Yamagishi, but she really never made an impression on me. I mean she could have been replaced by a satellite, but she did add to the cast. Granted, I never did get to her social link, because I tried to play the game being a monogamous individual. (I started the social link with Yuko, but in my head Minato broke up with her because they never spent time together. I only have eyes for Mitsuru)

Games You Probably Haven’t Played - Part 1

So I decided that I was going to have a series where I just outline some games that most people probably haven’t played. Nothing too special, I just thought it would be an excuse for me to do more writing as I try to mind my niche for this blog. Enjoy!

When I was younger, every Friday night my dad and I would go to blockbuster and pick up a video game or a movie. One particular weekend, I came across a game titled, ‘Mystical Ninja: Starring Goemon.’

Not really thinking entirely too much about it, and unimpressed with Blockbuster’s collection of video games, I decided that I would pick this up on a whim. Needless to say, that whim ended up being well worth it. I would describe this game as an actionized platformer. You play as a group of 4 ninja as they travel throughout Japan (and eventually outer space). Along with boss fights, this game also has mecha battles. Yeah that’s right, you play as ninja who pilot mecha!

You should definitely try to check this game out. It’s fun for all ages; the gameplay and story aren’t too complex for the younger ones, while there a plenty of jokes that older audiences can appreciate as well.

One of the newest Resident Evil games, coming out for the 3DS, Resident Evil: Revelations.

I have to say, looking forward for a chance to play as Jill Valentine.

30 Day VGC: Day 4 - What game/series do you think has the best storyline?

This was a really hard one to think of for a few reasons: First, I had to consider whether I wanted games with a standalone story, or look at an entire series of games that would have a more elaborate plot (and more likely to have plotholes as well!). Then I had to consider what went into actually have a “good” story, it had to be something that was just more than entertaining. Well, after a few days of thinking it over, I decided that the video games series with the best story, would be the .hack franchise!

.hack is set in a not so distant future, and revolves around an MMORPG (Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game) known as ‘The World.’ That’s right, you’re playing a game about playing a game. The thing about ‘The World,’ is that there are a lot of suspicious activities going on, such as sentient A.I.’s and players falling into comas. For the most part, you play as a character working to unravel the mystery and save your friends.

Chances are that most of you know about .hack (or dot hack) from the original release of four games during 2003 or from the anime .hack//SIGN. Majority of you probably remember seeing a few episode and probably getting bored, and that’s understandable considering how plot heavy this series is. Things such as action and adventure do take a backseat to character development and plot progression. But that’s acceptable, as the end result is a deep and elaborate story. One that’s definitely left an impression upon me.

My Mission

Well I’ve have this tumblr for a few days and I must say that I’m enjoying it so far. I’ve met some really cool people and I’ve had some interesting conversations about video games. This is great because of the fact that, from the people I know in real life, it’s really hard to come across someone who likes the same games I do (Persona, Shenmue, etc), and I’m not prepared to jump on the Call of Duty bandwagon.

But getting to the point of this post, I want to say that intend to use this blog to talk about what I love, video games. I would like to use this blog as a professional reference so I will be primarily making thoughtful posts on various subjects, and trying to add comments to anything I repost.

So I hope for those of you that bothered to read this, I hope that you’ll help me on this journey, and try to reblog me and let all your friends and followers know!
